Autumn Migration Magic
Autumn is my favourite season with September and October arguably the best months to be out birding in Norfolk. The magic of autumn migration can deliver some very special birds - rare warblers including:
- Pallas’s, Yellow-browed, Barred, Greenish, Dusky, Radde’s, Icterine and Wood Warblers being some of the stars of the season,
- our favourite bird the Wryneck, with Autumn probably the best time to find this cryptic wonder,
- other great birds such as Ring Ouzel, Great Grey and Red-backed Shrikes, Red-breasted, Pied and Spotted Flycatchers, Richard’s Pipit, Common Redstart, Whinchat, rare Wheatears and Red-flanked Bluetail are also all real possibilities.
Wandering through Holkham Pines and out onto Burnham Overy Dunes, exploring the trees and bushes lining Waxham Dunes or wandering through Winterton Dunes on a bright autumn morning after easterly winds and a little mist and rain can be exciting and extremely rewarding.
Our itinerary for the day will largely depend on weather conditions and our knowledge of what birds can be found where. We will explore the north and east coasts and some of Norfolk’s best reserves e.g. RSPB Titchwell and Cley NWT with lots of walking, looking and listening involved!
